About Daniel
Daniel Karslake is an award-winning American film director, producer, and writer known for his work on social justice issues. Born and raised in the United States, Karslake received his B.A. in public policy from Duke University.
Daniel began his career in television, working as a producer and director for the PBS newsmagazine IN THE LIFE, which aired in over 140 markets across the United States. His work on the show earned him an Emmy nomination from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
In 2007, Daniel made his feature film debut with FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO, a documentary exploring the intersection of religion and homosexuality in America. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was shortlisted for a 2008 Academy Award. It went on to win numerous awards and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
Following the success of his first film, Karslake directed and produced EVERY THREE SECONDS, a documentary examining solutions to extreme poverty and hunger around the world. He began work on this project as a visiting scholar at Stanford University.
In 2019, Karslake released FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO, a follow-up to his first film, which focuses on four families of faith discovering they have a gay or transgender child. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and has won multiple audience and jury awards.
Karslake has taught documentary filmmaking at both Duke University and Stanford University. He is a proud member of the Director's Guild of America.
Daniel currently resides in Berlin, Germany with his husband.
